SETTING UP NEW TECH
5 Steps to Set Up Your Kid’s New Tech the Right Way

Got a shiny new device for your child? 👀

Before handing it over, follow these steps to ensure it becomes a tool for growth, not a headache:

1. Create a Family Tech Contract
Establish ground rules for tech use. Agree on when, where, and how the device can be used. A great place to start is limiting tech use in bedrooms and around the dinner table. These guardrails help set clear boundaries from the start and empowers your child to use tech responsibly.

Here’s a sample smartphone contract to help you get started.

2. Talk About Online Safety
Teach your child basic online safety: avoid sharing personal information, recognize scams, and know how to report inappropriate behavior. Regular check-ins can help reinforce these lessons.

Use our family-friendly tech conversation videos to help begin these conversations with your child.

3. Set Up Parental Controls
Use parental controls to manage screen time, block inappropriate content, and monitor app downloads. Many devices include built-in features like Apple’s Family Sharing, or you can also use added tools like Bark Monitoring.

Our guides will walk you through everything you need to know.

4. Customize the Device
Disable unnecessary features (like social media or app stores) and pre-load educational apps or games. If the device has location tracking or monitoring, make sure those features are configured.

5. Stay Involved
A new device isn’t a “set it and forget it” moment. Regularly review how your child is using it and adjust settings as they grow. Use tech as an opportunity to stay connected and learn together.

For all those now connected, our friends over at Aro have a tool to help your family maximize intentional time away from your devices. You can learn more here.

  • If your phone could only do one thing, what would you want it to do?

  • What’s one tech habit you’d like to work on improving before the new year?

  • Do you think tech brings families closer together or pushes them apart?

  • If you had to spend Thanksgiving without any screens, what would you do instead?
